Castle beats Kaimuki in OIA East basketball, 56-44

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KANE'OHE — Castle High School boys basketball coach Rocky Fraticelli says he wasn't upset at the Knights' 30-point, seasoning-opening loss to Kalaheo on Jan. 3.

"I was upset at the effort put in the 30-point loss," said Fraticelli, who used the following day for a light practice and full-blown "bull session" with the players. "I thought we could have put in a much better effort."

The Knights have since reeled off five straight victories, including last night's 56-44 home win over previously unbeaten Kaimuki (5-1), the ninth-ranked team in this week's Advertiser Top 10 poll. Both teams trail No. 2 Kalaheo (5-0) in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division standings.

None of the Castle players scored in double figures, but eight of them scored four or more points. Jimmy Miyasaka led the Bulldogs with 13 points, and Daniel Tautofi added 12 points. But Tautofi, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound "point forward," had to sit out a key stretch late in the first period after picking up his second foul.

The Knights went on a 10-0 run that extended into the second period to lead 23-7. They never trailed by fewer than nine the rest of the game.

"When Daniel gets into foul trouble, it's always a concern because he's one of our better players inside and outside," Kaimuki coach Stephen Lee said. "But our whole offense struggled; give credit to Castle's defense. They're a very athletic team."

Fraticelli said the Knights planned to apply pressure through a mixture of defenses.

"Our concern was that everybody on their team can shoot the '3,' but we believed we had to press them full court," Fraticelli said. "It helped us because it made them work for shots and maybe force some shots. We went with our 'black' and 'white' presses and then a 2-1-2 matchup zone and a 2-3 zone."

To simulate Tautofi in practice, Fraticelli used longtime assistant coach Jeff Hiro, a former All-State player for Castle.

"They depend on Daniel a lot to bring the ball up the court," Fraticelli said. "We figured if we can make him play baseline to baseline, it'd be tougher on him."

More than strategy, however, Fraticelli said effort has made the biggest difference for the Knights in the past two weeks.

"The day after the Kalaheo game, we just went through some warmups and then spent the rest of the time sitting down and talking," Fraticelli said. "(Point guard) Joel (Botelho) and the captains got up there and they basically said, 'Where do we go from here?' Sometimes, the mental toughness aspect is more ignored than the X's and O's."

Lee said that's an issue his team now may have to address.

"We gotta rebound from this and not let it hurt us," Lee said. "What got us here is we played well as a team, but I thought we got out of that team play tonight. But we also lost to a good team. I had seen Castle early on and knew they were going to be there. They've got a lot of good athletes, and it was just their night."
