Kawai Nui gets roadside view

City Councilman Steve Holmes and a city work crew cleared about a quarter-mile of brush and trees yesterday from the side of Kailua Road that overlooks Kawai Nui Marsh near the entrance to Kailua town.
An excavator, a bulldozer and a crew worked all day crushing brush and clearing unwanted trees, Holmes said. Several trees were preserved, including native wiliwili and a monkeypod.
"It looks spectacular now that we've opened it up," said Holmes, who has cleared brush to open views along Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive.
Native plants and ground cover will replace the brush that has been removed, he said.
Next month, the Kalaheo side of the marsh will be cleared with the help of John King of All Pool and Spa, Holmes said. Work should begin Feb. 16 near the entrance of Kapa'a Quarry Road across the street from Kalaheo High School.
