Ruth Dawson of Honolulu helped Troy Foster of Kapolei light his candle during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration at the Civic Center. About 100 people attended the event, which also included the ringing of the Nagasaki Peace Bell. King preached nonviolence in the quest for equality.

Hawaiian Airlines employee Darcelle Chan shared a moment with an elephant seal moments before the young sea mammal was flown to San Francisco. A male elephant seal was rescued on the Kona coast of the Big Island after somehow making its way to Hawai'i. Elephant seals rarely are found in Hawaiian waters and National Marine Fisheries Service officials believe that this one came from the California area.
