Hawai'i's Kanoa, Iosua in Hula Bowl

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i offensive lineman Manly Kanoa III and defensive tackle Mike Iosua have accepted invitations to play in the Feb. 2 Hula Bowl Maui all-star football game at War Memorial Stadium.

Earlier, UH quarterback Nick Rolovich, slotback Craig Stutzmann, defensive end Joe Correia and safeties Nate Jackson, Jacob Espiau and Robert Grant agreed to participate.

Two weeks ago in San Francisco, Kanoa played in the East-West Shrine game, executing a key block on Deonce Whitaker's touchdown run. Kanoa is a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools.

Iosua, who was raised in Washington state, was named the Warriors' most inspirational player in 2001 after playing most of the season with a dislocated right shoulder and knee injury. Iosua, who attended the Air Force Academy before transferring to UH, is a math major who hopes to earn a post-graduate degree in business or engineering.

"I've been staying in shape, lifting weights, in case something came along," Iosua said.

Hula Bowl organizer Lenny Klompus said 96 players, including 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch of Nebraska, will compete.

Ah Mow was driving the car. Her Vicenza Volley teammate, Iskra Mijalic, was with her and suffered what was reported as "a fractured vertebra and spine luxation." Mijalic underwent a successful 4-hour operation Monday. Doctors expect her to fully recover.

• Chang wins opener: Michael Chang, the 29-year-old former French Open champion, won his opening-round match at the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger yesterday, sweeping fellow American Kevin Kim, 6-3, 7-5.

"It was tough match out there today," said Chang, seeded third. "Kevin played really good. He served really well."

Up next for Chang is another Kim — Alex, the 2000 NCAA singles champion for Stanford. He handled Russia's Artem Derepasko, 7-6 (5), 6-1, and is coming off an upset last week over No. 4 ranked Yevgeny Kafelnikov at the Australian Open.
