Man hit by trolley in Waikiki dies

An 88-year-old man struck last night by a Waikiki trolley died just after midnight today at The Queen's Medical Center.

The city medical examiner's office has identified the victim as William F. Lee.

Police are seeking witnesses who saw the accident, which happened about 7:10 p.m. at the intersection of Hobron Lane and Ala Moana Boulevard.

According to police reports, the trolley driver, a 33-year-old Honolulu man, was waiting to make a right turn onto Ala Moana while pedestrians crossed. The crossing signal was red.

The trolley began its turn after that group passed and its left side struck Lee.

Bail opposed for accused wife-killer

HILO, Hawai'i — Police officer Albert Pacheco threatened others and stalked his wife before killing her Jan. 4 near their Waikoloa Village home, according to a prosecutor's motion opposing bail.

Pacheco, 45, is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree criminal property damage, first-degree terroristic threatening and using a firearm in the commission of a felony for killing his wife, Cathalene Ann Pacheco, 42.

Police said he rammed his wife's van with his car, then shot her numerous times in the head.

Friends of Cathalene Pacheco, the mother of five children, said her husband had been abusing her for years. Albert Pacheco is being held without bail at Hawai'i Community Correctional Center, and has been on a suicide watch since he attempted to kill himself Jan. 5. Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura set a bail hearing for Feb. 15.
