Tonight's Must-See
"The Net" (1995), 8 p.m., UPN. Imagine that computers have suddenly snatched your life. Your bank account and credit cards are gone; your records are twisted. Instead of having a real life, you are on police wanted lists. Sandra Bullock plays a computer whiz who comes across damning information then finds bigger people using their computers to smite her. Bullock projects depth and humanity. The story is slickly told and sleekly filmed. If you forgive the too-convenient ending, you have a first-rate movie adventure.
Of Note
"Providence," 7 p.m., NBC. Syd has enough trouble with her malpractice suit. Now she's arguing with her cute lawyer, played by George Newbern.
"The Ellen Show," 7:30 p.m., CBS. This continues to be a good comedy, despite the fact that it's mostly ignored by viewers. Tonight, John Ritter plays a motivational speaker with questionable motives.
"Reba," 7 p.m., WB. Now that her husband has left and her teenaged, pregnant daughter has married, Reba decides it's time to return to work. She becomes a substitute teacher at her daughter's school.
"Once and Again," 8 p.m., ABC. In recent weeks, Rick's ex-wife has been falling apart. Now she's hospitalized. The slow recovery process brings mixed reactions, especially from her troubled son.
"Crimson Tide" (1995), 7 p.m., USA Network. Like "The Net," this is a slickly crafted movie adventure. The fate of the world depends on the people on a wounded nuclear submarine. For the top two officers (Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington), it's a tense battle of wills and words.
"The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), 7 p.m., A&E. Anthony Hopkins plays a brilliant and perverse killer. Jodie Foster is the young FBI agent who needs his help.
"Deadly Pursuits" (1996), 9 p.m., Lifetime. This is the only movie we know of that had Tori Spelling playing a lap dancer working for the mob.
"Law and Order: Special Victims Unit," 9 p.m., NBC. Benson and Fin combine to investigate the crime when a woman's body is found under a highway.
