Civil rights is focus of student art contest

Advertiser Staff

O'ahu elementary school students in grades 4, 5 and 6 are invited to enter the Hawai'i Civil Rights Art Contest.

Children are encouraged to reflect on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and think about what they can do in their lives to promote civil rights and diversity.

In addition to drawing a picture to illustrate their idea, students must write one or two lines explaining their idea at the bottom of the picture.

Winners will receive $50, and their classes will receive $100.

The contest is sponsored by the Hawai'i Civil Rights Commission, the Honolulu Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League and the Student Excellence Equity and Diversity program at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

Teachers in participating classrooms are asked to select the best entry from their class. Schools are asked to send in the selected entries from their campuses to: Martin Luther King Jr. Art Contest, Hawai'i Civil Rights Commission, 830 Punchbowl St., Room 411, Honolulu, HI 96813.

Entries must be received by Feb. 15.
