Castle topples Kailua, advances to semifinals

MILILANI — An undermanned Castle High School boys soccer team rallied past a short-handed and weary Kailua squad, 3-1, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinal action.

Mike Sakaba's goal off Jon Heu's assist gave Kailua (6-4-2) a 1-0 lead in the third minute, but Castle (8-1-2) scored three unanswered goals in the second half to advance to Tuesday's semifinals.

Justin Santos scored off an assist from Nolan Miranda to tie the match in the 65th minute, and Miranda scored unassisted five minutes later to give Castle a 2-1 lead. Miranda finished the scoring in the 78th minute with a goal off Trevor Applebaum's assist.

Neither team was operating at full strength. Castle, the East Division's No. 2 seed, had one starter dismissed from the team and another starter suspended in the past week. A third Knights starter was injured in practice on Wednesday and did not play.

In addition, Castle coach Matt MacDonagh said three reserves were declared academically ineligible under team rules.

"A lot of the guys who did play were playing out of position," MacDonagh said.

Kailua, No. 6 in the East, was playing without its starting goalkeeper due to a red card issued in Wednesday's first-round victory over Leilehua. The Surfriders also were drained, having played 100 minutes in a match that went to penalty kicks late Wednesday night in Wahiawa and returning to Central O'ahu immediately after school yesterday for a 5:15 match.

"Just to play the way we did and hang in there was a miracle," Kailua coach Steve Adams said.

One OIA athletic director at last night's matches said the first round and quarterfinals are held on consecutive days in part to maximize the "bye" advantage each division's top two teams receive by finishing atop the regular-season standings.

• Mililani 4, 'Aiea 1: At Mililani, Justin Kim scored two goals and Whitney Shimatsu and Ceferin Oliva each added one goal to lead the Trojans (10-0-0) past Na Ali'i (5-4-2).

Melvin Jungblut scored 'Aiea's goal off an assist from Derek Atta. That goal tied the score at 1-1 in the 10th minute, but Shimatsu's goal three minutes later gave Mililani the lead for good.

• Moanalua 2, Campbell 1: At Kaiser, the Menehunes (9-3) won after outscoring the Sabers 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Geoffrey Say scored in the 56th minute to give Moanalua a 1-0 lead, but Campbell (6-3-1) answered with Mike Ryman's goal in the 70th minute.

Neither team scored in the two 10-minute sudden-death overtime periods. Say, the Menehunes' eighth kicker in the penalty-kick tie-breaker, scored Moanalua's fourth point and Campbell missed on the next attempt to end it.
