No. 1 seed Blake rolls in USTA Challenger

Top-seeded James Blake defeated Belgium's Reginald Willams, 7-5, 6-2, yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger.

"I started off quite slow," said the 22-year-old Blake. "It took me a while to get things going but I worked myself into the match and played better right through until the end."

Blake advances to today's quarterfinals against Swedish qualifier Bjorn Rehnquist, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Gabriel Trifu.

Fan favorite and third seed Michael Chang had a tougher afternoon with Alex Kim, but earned the victory when the 2000 NCAA singles champion retired with cramps down 7-6 (7), 3-6, 4-3.

Chang will play sixth seed Vince Spadea, who also had trouble with the heat but advanced with a 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-0, victory over Giorgio Galimberti of Italy.

In other action, second-seeded Michael Russell pounded Swede Fredrik Jonsson 6-2, 6-1; 19-year-old Robby Ginepri continued to impress with an easy 6-2, 6-1 upset over No. 8 seed Ricardo Mello; 2000 Waikoloa champion Paul Goldstein remained in the hunt for a second crown following a 6-4, 6-3 win over Daniel Melo; and Dutchman Martin Vankerk knocked off Tomas Behrend, 6-3, 6-2.


COLLEGE TENNIS

• HPU blanks Sonoma State: Hawai'i Pacific University, ranked No. 1 in Division II men's tennis, defeated Sonoma State University (Calif.) 9-0 yesterday at the Kailua Racquet Club.

The Sea Warriors will play UH-Manoa today at the University of Hawai'i tennis complex at 2:30 p.m.


COLLEGE BASEBALL

• UH individual tickets sale: Individual tickets for the upcoming University of Hawai'i baseball season are on sale at the UH ticket office and TicketPlus locations.

Tickets are $6 for seats in the blue and orange sections, and $5 for the red section. Seniors (ages 65 and older), UH students (with ID) and students ages 4-18 may purchase red section tickets for $4.

Aforementioned tickets in their respective sections increase by $1 for the Outrigger Rainbow Easter Baseball Tournament. Three games are played each day of the week-long tournament.

The Rainbows open the season Jan. 30 against nationally ranked Florida State.

Also available are season tickets for Wahine softball. Cost is $40 for adults and $24 for seniors and $12.50 for UH students and students ages 4-18.
