City Council election today

The city is holding a special election today to fill the vacancy in City Council District 5. Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Registered voters in Manoa, Mo'ili'ili, McCully, Tantalus, Makiki, Pawa'a, Ala Moana and Kewalo will select someone to succeed Andy Mirikitani, who resigned Dec. 1 following his conviction on federal corruption charges. Voters must bring a photo ID with them.

Fourteen people are running to serve the final year of Mirikitani's term, which expires Jan. 2, 2003.

The candidates are Sam Aiona, John Anderson, Danny Auyoung, Albert Furuto, Nasir Gazdar, Richard Gee, Kekoa Kaapu, Joe Kinoshita, Ann Kobayashi, Richard Lee, Ron Lockwood, Harris Murabayashi, Richard Soo and John Steelquist.

Polling places are: Kaimuki High School, Church of the Crossroads, McCully Recreation Center, Ala Wai Elementary School, Kuhio Elementary School, Lunalilo Elementary School, Boys/Girls Club Spalding Clubhouse Gym, Noelani Elementary School, Hokulani Elementary School, University High School, Manoa Valley District Park pavilion, Manoa Elementary School, Manoa Valley District Park recreation building, St. Clement's Episcopal Church, Makiki District Park, Christ United Methodist Church, Lincoln Elementary School, Ka'ahumanu Elementary School and McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Beach Park.
