Campbell forfeits state playoff berth

Advertiser Staff

Campbell High's softball team, which finished fifth in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association playoffs last week, forfeited an undisclosed number of wins for using an academically ineligible player, causing the Sabers to forfeit a berth into next week's state tournament, the league confirmed last night.

Waialua's Ashley Yoshizu heads the ball upfield as Castle's Aimee Watanabe looks on. Castle defeated Waialua 2-1 in the first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association varsity girls soccer tournament.

The Sabers were 8-2 after regular season play and second place in the OIA West. They advanced to the playoffs, where they finished fifth. The top five teams from the OIA qualify for the state tournament.

The Sabers beat Kaimuki in a fifth-place playoff, but that was one of the wins forfeited, league softball coordinator Gordon Miyashiro said. He said the Bulldogs will be the OIA's fifth representative in the 12-team state tournament, which begins Wednesday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium at the University of Hawai'i.

Miyashiro said that even with the forfeits, which included some regular season wins, the Sabers still would have qualified for the OIA playoffs. He noted that Campbell did lose its first game of the playoffs before winning the fifth-place game.

It is the second time this season an OIA team had to forfeit games for using an ineligible player. Earlier, Pearl City's boys soccer team forfeited five wins and a tie that effectively eliminated the defending league champions from advancing to the playoffs.
