Brothers Daniel and Terrence Bolo said they were playing at the stream at about 6 p.m. near Anapuni Street and Wilder Avenue when they lost their slippers and went into the water after them. Their friend David Brunie, 11, was with them.
Daniel Bolo, 12, David Brunie, 11, and Terrence Bolo, 12, sit at the fire station after being rescued from Makiki Stream.
Then, said Daniel, 12, "We heard the water coming."
The water swept the boys away, carrying Daniel and David about one-half mile downstream, underneath the H-1 Freeway, through culverts all the way to King Street and Kalakaua Avenue, where they emerged in an open canal. "We went along for about 10 minutes," Daniel said. "It was scary."
Terrence got out on his own near where the water first snatched his brother and friend and ran home.
"I was at home," said Paquito Bolo, of 1420 Wilder Ave. "My son came running to me screaming."
Meanwhile, Daniel and David were clinging to a pipe dangling in the water alongside Kalakaua.
Along came David Wishner and his fiancee, Elizabeth Hallock, riding their bicycles in the rain.
"We heard voices coming from the canal," said Wishner of Chinatown. "I looked down and there were two boys." They helped the boys out, and Hallock called 911.
Paquito Bolo said he felt "relief, thank goodness, and very angry."
"They were all very lucky," said Battalion Chief Paul Gerard.
