Maui captures MIL softball tourney

Jana Medeiros pitched and batted Maui High to a 5-1 victory over Baldwin for the Maui Interscholstic League softball tournament title yesterday in Kahului.

Maui went 3-0 in the double-elimination tournament.

Medeiros earned the pitching victory and got two hits against the Bears. Natalie Lansman also had two hits for the Sabers.

The overall championship game between Maui and Baldwin, the regular-season champion, was called after three innings because of rain.

The game is scheduled to be replayed in its entirety at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Keopuolani Park in Kahului. If it rains, the game may be moved to Lahaina.

Maui and Baldwin already have earned state tournament berths.

BIG ISLAND SOCCER

• St. Joseph's upsets Hilo: Adam Woolverton, Guy Freitas and Eddie Carroll each scored a goal to lead St. Joseph over previously unbeaten Hilo, 3-2, in a semifinal of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation boys' soccer tournament yesterday at Hilo High.

In the other semifinal, Kealakehe beat Hawai'i Prep, 1-0.

Kealakehe plays St. Joseph for the tournament title at 3 p.m. on Wed-nesday at Kealakehe. The winner plays regular season champ Hilo, 2 p.m. Saturday for the overall title.

It was a monumental win for St. Joseph (11-4) because it qualified for its first state tournament berth.

Hilo and Kealakehe have also earned state berths.

The Vikings (13-1) got goals from Moihe Kanealii and Cody Ventura.


OIA GIRLS SOCCER

• Pearl City advances: Carmen Calpo and Joni Yoon each scored goals to lead Pearl City to a 2-1 victory over Kailua in O'ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinal action at Mililani.

The other three quarterfinal games were rained out and will be played tomorrow.

Kailua (7-2-2) scored first on Anela Gonzales' goal after a free kick near the penalty box in the 35th minute.

The Chargers (9-1-1) tied it on Yoon's free kick from about 30 yards out in the 39th minute.

The second half was played in a constant downpour. Calpo gave Pearl City a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute on a short header from the left side of net.

The Chargers outshot Kailua 7-1 in the second half.

After the game, Kahuku and Mililani came out for pregame warmups and were on the field for five minutes before officials announced the game would be postponed.

Pearl City, seeded No. 3 in the West, will play the winner of tomorrow's Kahuku-Mililani game in Wednesday's semifinals.

Kailua, No. 2 in the East, will play the loser of that game in a losers' bracket game Tuesday.

• Mililani girls win JV title: Shaunna Miyashiro scored the game's only goal to help the Tojans defeat Pearl City in the OIA JV championship game at Mililani.
