No. 1 Blake, Verkerk in tennis final

Top-seeded James Blake outslugged Vince Spadea 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-2, in 2 hours and 16-minutes to set up a showdown with Martin Verkerk in today's final of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger.

"The match was quite a war," said Blake,22, who is seeking his fourth career Challenger title. "We battled out there today and Vince played really well."

In the earlier semifinal, the surprising Verkerk defeated Robby Ginepri, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in a 1-hour 53-minute contest.

In the doubles semifinals, the top-seeded team of Blake and Justin Gimelstob topped the No. 3 seeds Mark Merklein and Paul Rosner, 6-3, 6-3. Blake and Gimelstob will play Gabriel Trifu and Glenn Weiner who edged the American team of Robby Ginepri and Robert Kendrick 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Today's single final will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the doubles.


COLLEGE BASKETBALL

• BYUH tips Chaminade: Scott Salisbury scored 23 points and Alexus Foyle added 18, leading the Brigham Young-Hawai'i Seasiders to an 82-80 victory over Chaminade last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

Yuta Tabuse added 16 and Keli'i Naihe 13 for BYUH, which improved to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the PacWest.

Igor Beljanski scored 16 and Mike Donegan 14 for the Silverswords (10-8, 3-4).


QB CLUB

• Basketball coaches featured: Head basketball coaches Jeff Law (UH-Hilo) and Ken Wagner (BYU-Hawai'i) will be the featured speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Lunch begins at 11:30, with the program to follow.

Iolani swimmer Hong Zhe Sun, who won the 100- and 200-meter backstroke at the U.S. Open will also be featured at the luncheon.


COLLEGE TENNIS

• HPU men defeat UH: Hawai'i Pacific College, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, defeated the University of Hawai'i, 3-2, on Friday in the annual City intercollegiate Tournament at the UH Tennis Complex.


LAWN BOWLING

• World champion to play here: Three-time World Lawn Bowling Champion David Bryant will compete against the Honolulu Lawn Bowls Club tomorrow at Ala Moana Park starting at 2 p.m.
