Woman arrested after Kapahulu stabbing

A 31-year-old Kapahulu woman was arrested today after a domestic argument escalated into a stabbing.

Police have opened an attempted murder investigation into the case. Police said the woman stabbed her 34-year-old boyfriend in their Kana'ina Avenue home shortly before midnight.

Laumaka escapee sought by police

Police today were searching for a prisoner who escaped from the work furlough center on Laumaka Street after a random drug test.

State public safety officials identified him as Michael Jay, 23. He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 132 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes and multiple tattoos on his neck, legs, arms and back, said Clayton Frank, warden at the Laumaka Work Furlough Center.

Jay, who has been an inmate since his 1999 conviction on burglary and assault charges, was transferred to the center from the Waiawa Correctional Facility on Jan. 3. He was due for parole Oct. 4, Frank said.

Frank said the Laumaka facility had ordered Jay and five other inmates into a random drug test this morning. They were released to return to their dormitories but, shortly after 7 a.m., Jay hopped the fence and fled, Frank said.

A witness alerted the Kalihi substation that he'd been spotted in the area at about 7:35 a.m., police said.

A helicopter helped in the search. Information about the suspect was not being released this morning.

Inmates at the Laumaka Work Furlough Center are not considered dangerous and are allowed to hold jobs and return to the facility at night unsupervised. Jay was still seeking employment, Frank said.

A driver who fell asleep at the wheel at about 2:19 a.m. ran off the road in Hau'ula and struck a utility pole.

However, the crash, which occurred near Ahi's Restaurant, knocked out a portion of the utility pole. The mauka lane near 53-146 Kamehameha Highway was blocked for hours into the morning rush while the utility lines were secured. About 30 customers were affected by the power outage that resulted, a Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman said.
