Malloy earned the first professional victory of his career yesterday in the Faith Riding Pro. The final day of the contest was completed in 6- to 8-foot waves at Sunset Beach.

Malloy, 24, was a last-minute entry into the contest because he wanted to surf at Sunset Beach over the weekend.

"I got into Hawai'i about four days before the contest started," said Malloy, who is from Ventura, Calif. "I wanted to surf at Sunset, and when I heard the contest was on, I figured the only way I would get to surf was to enter the contest."

In the four-man final, Malloy opened the heat by riding through one of the few barreling waves of the day.

"There were maybe one or two barrels in every heat," he said. "I was lucky to get a couple."

The judges rewarded him with a score of 9.23 (out of 10) that gave him a lead he would not relinquish the rest of the way. His final three-wave total was 18.43.

Malloy, who spends most of the winter months surfing in Hawai'i, earned $2,500 for the victory.

"It's a big deal for me because it was at Sunset," he said. "I love surfing in Hawai'i and Sunset is my favorite place."

Liam McNamara of O'ahu's North Shore was second with a three-wave score of 16.07. He earned $1,000.

Nathan Carroll, a 16-year-old home school student from Sunset Beach, placed third. Shawn Sutton of Kapolei was fourth.
