Man injured in fight; 1 held

A 41-year-old man remained in custody today while police pursued an attempted murder charge following a fight last night at Ke'ehi Boat Harbor that left another man critically injured.

The fight broke out at about 5:30 p.m. in the harbor parking lot, said homicide Lt. Bill Kato. Witnesses told police that the victim, 49, at first pushed the suspect in the chest but was then shoved to the ground by the younger man.

The suspect then reportedly banged the victim's head into the pavement while he straddled his chest, punching him in the face and head.

A third person intervened to stop the beating and got into a scuffle with the suspect. Those men fled, leaving the victim, who was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police said a 37-year-old Honolulu man was driving a 1992 white Ford Crown Victoria in the makai lane of Kuhio, in a diamondhead direction. The pedestrian dove or fell into the roadway, police said, just past the intersection with Uluniu Avenue.

The pedestrian, who was not in the crosswalk, was struck by the car and suffered head injuries.

The accident happened during rainfall. Police do not suspect speed or alcohol as factors affecting the driver, but they don't know whether alcohol affected the pedestrian.

The eastbound lanes of the H-1 freeway, except for the ZipLane, were closed for about an hour this morning near 'Aiea due to car fire at about 7:28 a.m.

Fire officials said the driver, who escaped unharmed, reported that her car had stalled in one of the middle lanes near the 'Aiea overpass. She noticed that the engine was smoking and left the burning car, using her cellular phone to call for help.

The ZipLane passenger requirement was waived until 8:30 a.m. to help clear the traffic backlog.
