TIP-OFF
Man behind the limelight gets a salute

By Wayne Harada

He's put on more shows than there are in heaven. Yet he's seldom in the spotlight.

So impresario Tom Moffatt's time has come.

Moffatt, called "Uncle Tom" when he was known as a radio personality, will be saluted and honored in a Manoa Valley Theatre benefit, from 6 to 11 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom.

"Fifty Years of Entertainment: A Salute to Tom Moffatt" will track Moffatt's community achievements, with appearances by surprise celebs. Joe Moore, a longtime friend and fan of Moffatt's shows, will be master of ceremonies.

The event includes a dinner, a silent auction including rock 'n' roll memorabilia, dancing to the Motor City Angels and a program honoring Moffatt.

"I like putting my local bands or concert headliners in the limelight," Moffatt said. "They're the stars, not me."

"For all his accomplishments, the man remains humble to the core," said Lyssa Reese, MVT volunteer board member and co-chairwoman of the event.

Tickets are $150 or $1,500 or $2,000 for a table of 10. For reservations, call 988-6131.
