Notes: Iolani's Low to Nike camp

Advertiser Staff

Iolani School sophomore Derrick Low has been invited to participate in the prestigious Nike All-American basketball camp in Indianapolis from July 5-10. He is the first player from Hawai'i ever invited to the camp.

The Nike camp is regarded by many as the premier camp of its kind, selecting 100 elite high school players from across the nation. Low is one of about 20 underclassmen to be invited.

According to Nike, more NCAA Division I coaches attend its camp than any other high school basketball event.

Low, a 6-foot point guard, was named Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year and first-team All-State as a freshman. He was believed to be the first ninth-grader to win the ILH scoring title.

Last summer, Low participated in the Nike Hoop Jamboree Freshman/Sophomore Camp in St. Louis, Mo., where he was evaluated as one of the top guards for the Class of 2004. Low also was observed in the Iolani Prep Classic tournament last month by Don Crenshaw, Nike's director of player development, and Jeff Rogers, Nike's director of high school basketball.
