Jimmy Miyake, a player, coach and organizer of Big Island baseball, was chosen 2001 Big Island Sportsman of the Year in an ongoing sports recognition program.

Don Hoota, head of the sponsoring Don's Grill, said Miyake was being recognized for his longtime volunteer role with the Waiakea Pirates Athletic Association and the Americans of Japanese Ancestry Memorial Baseball League.

Miyake was a star player both at Hilo High and later at UH-Manoa under retired coach Les Murakami.

He also was cited for his work with five other church and community groups.

Scott Prather, a four-year starting point guard at Hawai'i-Hilo, was named the 2001 Athlete of the Year for his role as an outstanding player and being a top scholar. He has honor role grades in business administration.

Twice he was the UHH Scholar Athlete of the Year. He achieved a 4.0 grade-point average in the fall semester.

Miyake and Prather each won a ticket to the Hula Bowl Maui game and round-trip air tickets. They are to be recognized at a luncheon at Hawai'i Community College in March along with 10 other monthly Big Island award winners.
