Iolani basketball beats Punahou

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Iolani ended any drama in the race for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball championship last night with a 63-55 victory over host Punahou.

Iolani's Derrick Low shoots over Punahou's Kynan Pang, who draws a foul. Iolani won, 63-55.

Bobby Webster scored 20 points and Derrick Low 16 as Iolani (9-0) won.

"I'm proud of our kids because it was a tough, physical game in tough conditions," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "It was a must win for Punahou so they were playing really hard. We did a nice job."

Punahou is 6-3 and Kamehameha and St. Louis are 5-3. (Last night's Kamehameha vs. Mid-Pacific game was not reported.)

"That's not something we wanted to be in because you have to play extra games," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "We still control our own destiny in terms of if we win our last three games then we'll be the No. 2 in the ILH. We have no problem with that."

Low injured his wrist with 38 seconds remaining in the first quarter when he scored on a layup and landed hard after being fouled. He wasn't able to shoot the ensuing free throw.

Low re-entered the game with 5:41 to go in the second quarter, but didn't score the rest of the half.

"It was a scare when Derrick went down because he's such a big part of our offense and defense," Webster said. "We came out nicely and adjusted and fortunately he was OK."

Webster scored eight points in the second quarter, including two 3-pointers, as the Raiders took a 32-23 halftime lead.

Iolani made 14 of 27 shots in the first half, and forced 10 turnovers with man-to-man and zone-trap defenses.

"We play multiple defenses and do a lot of different things, and because we're (tall) we can get into passing lanes really well," Mugiishi said.

Low scored 12 points in the second half and did a good job of handling the ball when Punahou increased its defensive pressure.

"My wrist is fine," Low said. "When I fell down my elbow came into my stomach and I fell on the right side of my body and it knocked the air out of me."

Correction: Iolani's boys basketball team did not clinch a tie for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship Tuesday night as reported in a previous version of this story. The Raiders clinched a tie for first place in final regular-season standings. If the season should end in a tie, there will be a playoff next week for the championship.
