• Hawai'i's congressional lawmakers — Sens. Dan Inouye and Daniel Akaka and Reps. Neil abercrombie and Patsy Mink — are scheduled to address a two-day conference sponsored by the COUNCIL FOR NATIVE HAWAIIAN ADVANCEMENT.

The gathering, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, will focus on opportunities for Native Hawaiian-owned businesses to secure a piece of the approximately $20 billion of federal annual expenditure for everything from digital technology, food services and construction to livestock and aquaculture. According to the council, federal agencies are encouraged to purchase a percentage of these goods from small disadvantaged businesses.

Participants in the conference will include Seiji Naya, head of the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism; Andrew Poepoe, director of the Small Business Administration's Hawai'i-Guam district; Clyde Namuo, administrator of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs; Haunani Apoliona, chairwoman of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs; and Patricia M.
