THE LEFT LANE
Stitch on your back

The characters from the recently released Disney animated film "Lilo & Stitch" are turning up everywhere, even on Islanders' backs.

The folks at Reyn Spooner worked with Disney to create a special print in keeping with the film's theme, the importance of 'ohana. The blue fabric features images of Stitch, Lilo, Stitch's space vehicle, Lilo's surfboard and hibiscus flowers against a Hawaiian-inspired block print background.

The limited-edition line includes a spaghetti-strap dress for women ($79), A-line and baby-doll dresses for girls ($47.50), aloha shirts for boys ($47.50) and men ($77.50, $81 for 3XL), available in selected Reyn's stores (check Ala Moana and Kahala Mall) and online at www.reyns.com.

Hitler's hubris

CBS is taking a chance with its next mini-series: a four-hour examination of Hitler's rise to power in Germany. It's based on the best-selling book "Hitler: 1889-1936: Hubris" by Ian Kershaw, considered the pre-eminent scholar on the German dictator.

"Hubris" was the first biography to use Joseph Goebbels' diaries, which were discovered in Moscow only a few years ago. Kershaw was the first to put forth the concept that to examine Hitler, one must look at the society that brought him to power, effectively asking the question, "How did Hitler become Hitler?"

Mini feng shui

Interested in feng shui but not ready for a doctoral course? Check out "Feng Shui for Lunch," a mini-class in the Chinese art of courting good fortune and going with the flow of chi (energy). Hawai'i writer Alan Lum has partnered with feng shui consultant Clarence Lau to create the colorful 62-page small-format paperback, which is organized along the lines of a traditional Chinese meal.

You can pause for a cup of tea — a brief chapter that defines feng shui — or go for the full-course menu, which includes segments on the philosophies behind feng shui, an introduction to the elements as defined in Chinese thought and a discussion of the two major feng shui schools. Lum and Lau are working a full-size book on the subject, due out later this summer. To order, send check or money order for $8.50, name and address to Alan Lum Publishing, P.O. Box 19157, Honolulu, HI 96817. Order by phone at (808) 735-5688.
