Willoughby shines, but U.S. swept in Mexico

The University of Hawai'i's Kim Willoughby had eight points on six kills and two blocks, but the U.S. women's national volleyball training team fell to Argentina, 25-23, 25-20, 25-16, yesterday in the fifth-place match of the Pan American Cup at Tijuana, Mexico.
Willoughby, an All-American, will be a junior for the Wahine this fall. The Wahine won the WAC last season and made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament.
She also played for the UH Wahine basketball team last season, which advanced to the WAC title game.
Caroline Costagrande had 15 points (11 kills, three blocks and one ace) to lead Argentina.
Jenny Joines led the U.S. with nine points (six kills and three blocks).
Cuba defeated the Dominican Republic for the championship.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Metzger, Wong finish third: Punahou School graduates Stein Metzger and Scott Wong took third yesterday at the AVP Belmar Open beach volleyball tournament at Belmar, N.J.
Metzger and Wong, the second seeds, lost to top seeds Eric Fonoimoana and Dax Holdren, 21-14, 21-18, in the semifinals. Metzger and Wong split $5,825.
Sixth-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh beat Holdren and Fonoimoana in the final, 21-18, 21-16. It was their first win of the season.
Two other Punahou alumni Mike Lambert and Lee LeGrande, the eighth seeds, finished fifth.
GYMNASTICS
Junior Olympic qualifiers: Aleia Monden, Matt Moniz, Kira Vercruyssen and Nani Vercruyssen, all from Hawai'i Academy, qualified to compete in the USA Gymnastics Trampoline and Tumbling Junior Olympic National Championships at Indianapolis, July 10-16.
The four gymnasts will be competing in power tumbling, trampoline and double-mini trampoline.
MEETINGS
QB Club: State Sen. Fred Hemmings and Hawai'i boxer Jesus Salud will be the featured speakers at today's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel.
Hemmings will speak about a major initiative for education and the sports industry in Hawai'i at the collegiate level.
Salud will focus on boxing's comeback in the state.
