Man possibly hit twice by autos

A 65-year-old Wai'anae man died last night at the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center of injuries from what may have been two consecutive accidents.

Police are investigating whether the pedestrian, whose name has not been released, was struck by a car on Ma'ili'ili Road last night before the 8:47 p.m. accident that hospitalized him.

In that collision, police said, a brown 1988 Toyota two-door van was traveling southwest when it struck the man, who was sitting in the roadway about two-tenths of a mile southwest of the Pa'akea Road intersection.

Police said the van's driver, a 37-year-old man from Ma'ili, was not speeding or under the influence of alcohol when he struck the victim, who was not in a crosswalk. Investigators said the roadway was unlit.

Tired bicyclist rescued on Maui

Maui fire crews were dispatched last night to rescue a female tourist who became exhausted on a mountain-biking expedition yesterday.

The woman, visiting from Seattle, had been biking in the Polipoli Forest Reserve above Kula with a group of other tourists, who summoned help at 4:51 p.m., said Gordon Cordeiro, Maui Fire Department assistant chief.

The Kula engine company, a rescue company and a helicopter crew were dispatched, and the woman was airlifted out at about 7 p.m., Cordeiro said.

Victim nabs car break-in suspect

A Kaimuki resident served as both crime victim and detective yesterday when he caught a suspect two hours after he allegedly broke into his car and stole CDs and stereo equipment.

The victim came home at 6:50 a.m. yesterday and saw a man standing next to his car with the door open; the suspect allegedly fled into a waiting car.

Two hours later while on the way to a Kapahulu Avenue store, the victim spots the suspect, who flees into a nearby house. Police are called and catch both that suspect and the man who allegedly drove the getaway car at the crime.
