Another goof on Hawai'i Kai sign

If the misplacement of the Hawai'i Kai gateway sign wasn't problem enough, the maker of the sign has owned up to another mistake: the okina, the pronunciation mark in "Hawai'i," is facing the wrong way.

Instead of a diacritical mark, it's an apostrophe. Residents noticed the problem during the brief time the sign was not under the gray cover. The sign maker will fix the error at no cost to taxpayers, said Carol Costa, city spokeswoman.

The community alerted the city last week that the sign faced the intersection instead of the highway.

The architect has agreed to pay to re-orient the sign so it faces incoming and outgoing traffic.
