COLLEGE COMMITMENTS
Sacred Hearts' Aiwohi will walk on to UH basketball

By Dennis Anderson

Brittney Aiwohi of Sacred Hearts Academy, a second-team all-state basketball player and honorable mention soccer goalkeeper, has chosen basketball for her college sport and has decided to walk on at the University of Hawai'i.

Aiwohi, a 5-11 forward, made official basketball visits to Loyola Marymount and Sonoma State in California late last month, but turned down their invitations to walk on and compete for a scholarship. She said she wanted to stay home anyway.

Aiwohi said she had a scholarship offer from Northwest Missouri State for soccer but said "I didn't want to play soccer."

In other recent commitments:

  • 2001 all-state pitcher Chad Bailey (Campbell '01) is moving south and hoping for warmer weather next spring at Seminole State (JC) in Oklahoma. He played at North Idaho JC this year, but said the early season cold caused problems and contributed to a 4-6 record. North Idaho put its baseball program in the deep freeze because of financial problems. Bailey's plan is to sign after the junior college season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who drafted him in the 47th round last month.
  • State 200-yard freestyle swimming champion Jessica Nohara (Lahainaluna) will walk on to the University of Hawai'i swimming team.
  • Kristen Kutara, first-team all-state defensive specialist for Iolani's state girls volleyball champions, will play at NCAA Division III Willamette (Ore.).
  • Quarterback Ric Fukushima (Moanalua), tight end David Marsh (Punahou) and offensive lineman Mike Hom (Hawai'i Baptist Academy/Pac-Five) plan to play football at Occidental (L.A.). They join previously announced Derek Turbin (Punahou), who was the state triple jump champion and a tight end-defensive end in high school.

"We graduated three players from Hawai'i and we had no underclassmen, so we're pretty happy to be starting with this new group," said Dale Widolff, head coach at Occidental.
