Komine perfect in brief pro debut
Advertiser Staff
Honolulu's Shane Komine, one of the most effective pitchers in college baseball history, made his professional debut last night in Visalia, Calif., albeit a short one.
Right-hander Komine pitched one inning of scoreless relief, striking out one batter, as his Visalia Oaks defeated the San Jose Giants, 7-3. Komine retired the side in order in the eighth.
Komine is scheduled to be a starting pitcher for Visalia, but the Oaks plan to break him in gradually, spokesman David Skoczen said.
Komine, a 1998 Kalani High graduate, completed a record-setting career for Nebraska last month as the sixth pitcher to join college baseball's 40/500 club (he had 41 wins and 510 strikeouts).
Komine signed with the Oakland A's on June 22 after being picked in the ninth round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft on June 5. He received a modest signing bonus of between $15,000 and $20,000.
