Man from Japan dies at Lanikai

A 40-year-old man from Japan died of an apparent drowning off Lanikai Beach yesterday afternoon.

The man was seen swimming alone and waving his arms, but witnesses on the beach did not think he was in trouble, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada. But the man was seen drifting and that's when another beachgoer swam out to him, Tejada said.

The man was unconscious when he was brought to shore at about 1:20 p.m., Tejada said. Firefighters began CPR, but the man died at the scene.

An autopsy will be done.
