Dog attacks boy at boat harbor
A 90-pound pit bull attacked a 10-year-old Wai'anae boy yesterday after the dog broke the rope tied around its neck.
The attack occurred at the Wai'anae Boat Harbor at about 4 p.m. said Capt. Kenison Tejada of the Honolulu Fire Department.
"We applied some dressing to his wound, and then the ambulance took him away," said Tejada. "There were a lot of people around, and it got confusing. He had a pretty deep gash to his leg, right below the shin area."
Police patrolman Fumikazu Muraoka said the child was calm but crying in pain when officers arrived.
"The Fire Department had already bandaged the wound when I arrived," Muraoka said. "But they said it was pretty deep and would need some stitches."
Muraoka said the dog, tied with heavy rope, was by a fenced area but it lunged with such force that the rope snapped.
"I guess some other kids were teasing the dog throughout the day," he said. "It finally got fed up and broke loose and bit the first kid that was close by."
The boy was taken to St. Francis West Hospital, treated and released in good condition.
