Pair to attend congress in D.C.

Two high-school sophomores were selected from a group of 90 from both public and private schools Islandwide to attend the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C., July 20-26.

The two are Andrea Kelekolio of Waipahu High School and Patrick Sullivan of Punahou School. Both will be awarded scholarships to attend the congress.

Kelly Orner of Leilehua High School and Kellan Kubo of Saint Louis School were chosen as alternates and also invited to the congress.

HOBY, a youth leadership development organization, seeks out, develops and recognizes leadership potential of high school sophomores. The program was established by actor Hugh O'Brian, who was inspired while visiting Dr. Albert Schweitzer, who said, "The most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves."


Scholarship awardees named

The following students have received scholarships:

  • $1,500 each from USA Funds to Bo Kim of Leilehua High, and Nicole Maile Kalama of Nanakuli High & Intermediate School.

  • Market City Foundation scholarships of $1,000: Peter Sho-Yao Chang, Kaimuki High School; Diem Phue Thi Huynh, Kaimuki High; Stephanie Ka Yi Lee, Kaimuki High; Jane Yuh-Chi Lin, Kaimuki High; Kristen Mariko Murashige, to attend UH-Manoa; Nhan Minh Nguyen, Kaimuki High; Casey Piedra, Kaimuki High; Joshua Smith, Kalani High; and Nikki-Ann Galutria Guevarra, Sacred Hearts Academy.
  • Scholarships for Military Children awardees: Mary Catnugal, to attend UH-Manoa; Aaron Isaki, UH-Manoa; Sherrita Benjamin, University of North Carolina; Bo Kim, University of Washington; Mariel Romero, University of Central Florida; Heather Adams, Point Loma Nazarene College; Timothy Kelly, Bob Jones University; and Adeline Del Rosario, Chaminade University.
  • Kailea Crommett, Allison Lee, Nicole Morrall, Marissa Yogi, Julie Ann Minaai, Shannon Hirao and Adrienne Vogel, all of Mid-Pacific Institute, have received scholarships to attend the Summer Dance Program of the prestigious Alvin Ailey School in New York City.
