Advertiser Staff and News Services

Alicia Vela-Bailey, 19, a 2000 Kalaheo High School graduate and a member of Marcelo Pacleb's 24-7 Danceforce troupe, has been named Well Rounded Dancer 2002-2003 in the Urban Jamm Dance Conventions/Competition in Los Angeles.

The honor recognizes a dancer who excels in all areas of dance and maintains a hard-working attitude.

Vela-Bailey, who models for ADR Modeling and Talent Agency, can be seen in Hawai'i in a Toyota Matrix commercial.

Previously, she performed in two Pro Bowls as a featured dancer with 98 Degrees and Sugar Ray, and has appeared on stage in Castle Performing Arts Center's productions of "The King and I" and "Sweet Charity." She also was a winner in PAX-TV's "Destination Stardom" talent show. Vela-Bailey said she hopes to move to Los Angeles to pursue her career.

Lifetime of reading

In the latest attempt to tap the power of television to sell magazines, Hearst Corp. is launching a women's magazine based on programming from the Lifetime cable channel, which it co-owns along with the Walt Disney Co. The new magazine, to be called simply Lifetime, is set to premiere next March with a circulation of 500,000. It will go to a monthly schedule by September '03.

Lifetime is now the top-rated cable channel in prime time, and will be used to promote the new magazine. The publication will feature articles based on shows on the cable channel, including "Intimate Portrait" and original movies, as well as fashion, beauty, relationships and other topics.

A look at brewery

Yan can dish it up

Even with all of Martin Yan's spunk, the TV chef says he just couldn't feed everyone who wanted to try a bite of his tasty Asian concoctions — until now. Yan's first casual restaurant opened recently in Pleasant Hill, Calif., offering pan-Asian specialties ranging from Thai curry to Korean barbecue. And, he says, it's just the beginning.

The energetic, sometimes zany chef, whose "Yan Can Cook" show is broadcast in 70 countries, says he hopes his restaurants will grow into a national chain. Four other California restaurants already are in the works as part of the pilot project.
