Ready, set, get those books
One of Hawai'i's biggest treasure hunts, the Friends of the Library of Hawaii's 55th Annual Book Sale, opens an eight-day run Saturday at McKinley High School Cafeteria. The sale, expanded over the years to not only include books but CDs, sheet music, videocassette tapes, magazines and paperbacks, offers more than 70 tons of donations that are being unpacked daily from more than 3,000 cartons of goods collected for the sale. Indeed, the sale is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the United States, according to organizer Caroline B. Dvojacki, Friends executive director. Because individual tastes differ, it doesn't matter when you go through the stacks and rows of bargains. Sale hours: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday through July 12, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. July 13. Real bargain hunters know that prices are slashed before closing (50 cents on the final day), but die-hard book lovers will tell you the early bird gets first dibs and the thrill of discovering that "find." Admission is free. 536-4174.
For the love of hula
Hula takes an international swing when Hula Ho'olauna Aloha stages its first hula festival, a two-pronged celebration at noon Saturday at Ala Moana Center's Centerstage, and at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Coconut Grove of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The dancers, from Japan, have discovered a sense of healing, relaxation and spiritual cleansing through hula, so they have journeyed to the source for their first festival, showcasing island musicians as well. The Ala Moana appearance is an exhibition, the Royal Hawaiian event a competition. Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett performs an opening chant at both programs, with Na Leo and Konishiki making guest appearances; Herb Ohta Jr., Keli'i Kaneali'i and Kilinahe perform Sunday. Admission is free, but contributions, which will be relayed to selected charities, will be accepted at the competition. 926-4505.
