Stanley leads U.S. men past Canada

Advertiser Staff

Clay Stanley of Honolulu scored a match-high 21 points to lead the United States men's national volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 victory over Canada at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville last night.

Stanley, a former Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i athlete, had 19 kills and two aces for the United States. He posted a hitting percentage of .519.

"Clay Stanley and Jim Polster (9 points on eight kills and one block) did a nice job for us," said U.S. coach Doug Beal. "In the last match our middles were good, but we couldn't pass well enough to get them the ball as much as we would have liked."

The four-match series, tied at one apiece, continues tonight and on Sunday.
