Bown gets 16 kills in U.S. loss to Italy

Italy defeated the United States women's national volleyball team in five games, despite a match-high 21 points from former University of Hawai'i player Heather Bown, at Sandy, Utah, Thursday night. The scores were 25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12.
Logan Tom added 19 points for the U.S., which fell to 3-9. Bown blasted 16 kills with four blocks and one ace. Tom had 14 kills, a match-high four aces and one block.
Elisa Togut scored 16 points and Manuela Leggeri added 15 for Italy.
The teams split a four-match series.
At Louisville, Ky., the U.S. men's national team (8-11) behind Pieter Olree's 18 points (15 kills, two blocks, one service ace) rallied to defeat Canada 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 26-24, 15-11.

Metzger-Wong team loses: Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong lost two matches and were eliminated from title contention yesterday at the third FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in Stavanger, Norway.
Dain Blanton (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Karl Henkel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) upset the 11th-seeded Metzger and Wong 13-21, 26-24 and 18-16 in a 67-minute match to open yesterday.
Metzger and Wong then dropped a 21-19, 22-24 and 15-11 decision to the sixth-seeded brothers Martin and Paul Laciga of Switzerland.
CYCLING
Paradise Ride set: The 5th annual Paradise Ride, a cycling event over four islands, is July 20-27.
The ride benefits HIV/AIDS education, treatment and support programs in Hawai'i.
Participants begin with a O'ahu ride starting in Waikiki and also do rides on Kaua'i, Maui and in Kona on the Big Island for a total of 360 miles.
There also will be single-day, 40-mile options July 21 on O'ahu and July 22 on Kaua'i.
