A weekend of art, crafts in Honolulu
Plenty is on tap for art lovers:
ArtSpree is The Contemporary Museum's annual gift to the community, and it's happening Saturday. ArtSpree 2002 promises continuous art-related activities in two locations at the Makiki Heights museum itself and in King Kalakaua Plaza. Demonstrations and performances of dance, music and art by local artists are jammed into the schedule for the day. Children can participate in the artist-guided, hands-on activities of wire and cardboard sculpture, screen-printing, ceramics, fiber, and face-painting. Docent guides will be available to answer questions in the galleries. The Contemporary Cafe has planned a special ArtSpree menu, with cuisine by award-winning chef Noreen Lam, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Free shuttle service from Punahou School and King Kalakaua Plaza to the museum.
The Pacific Handcrafters Guild's 28th annual Summer Festival of Art and Fine Crafts takes place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. next Sunday at Thomas Square Park. Free and open to the public, the festival offers some of the highest quality art and craft works in the Islands, with food and entertainment as well.
