Kaimuki plans Aug. 10 festival

A Kaimuki Kanikapila is planned for Aug. 10 to celebrate the completion of phase one traffic calming on Wai'alae Avenue and to invite the public to see the business district following $2.6 million of city vision team improvements.

The event, sponsored by the Greater East Honolulu Community Alliance and the city, will begin at 10 a.m. with children's events at Kaimuki Community Park.

At 3:30 p.m. Wai'alae Avenue from Sierra Drive to Koko Head Avenue will be closed to traffic, and area restaurants and shops will set up food and craft booths. Two stages will be set up for free entertainment and a block of 12th Avenue will be closed to traffic for a live theater production.

The roads will reopen by 10 p.m.

Wai'alae Avenue improvements include new sidewalks with planter boxes; removal of utility wires; "bulb-outs" to slow traffic; wheelchair-accessible sidewalks; and installation of old-style streetlights.

New Waimanalo sites blessed

The Waimanalo Health Center blessed three facilities last week, including a new building dedicated to Dr. H. William Goebert.

The building will be used as a community and education hall, in which the clinic will conduct diabetes training and nutrition programs.

Goebert, who died in 1999, volunteered his time and skills at the clinic for three years after retiring.

The $300,000 center was built with money from the state and a foundation.

On the same day, the center also blessed two trailers donated by Kaiser Permanente that the clinic will use to house its 'Ai Kupele-Cultural Healing Center and a new medical annex.
