Young writers recognized

To enhance educational opportunity for all students in Hawai'i public schools, the Hawai'i Education Association rewards literary achievement through its annual Creative Writing Festival. This year's winners were:

• Essay Contest, grades 4-6, first place, Trevor Ram; second, Kristian Au, both of La'ie Elementary; third, Taryn Emi Takebayashi, University Laboratory School.

• Essay Contest, grades 7-8, first place, Nathan Malinoski; second, Kelly Noecker, both of University Laboratory School; third, Alan Jackson of Moanalua Middle School.

• Essay Contest, grades 9-12, first place, Alvin Lin, Roosevelt High; second, Ben Nishimoto, University Laboratory School; third, Marrianne Sioson, Maui High.

• Short Story Contest, grades 7-8, first place, Elyse Takashige, Kawananakoa Middle School; second, Allison Fujimoto of Niu Valley Middle School; third, Courtney Kandler, of Niu Valley Middle School.

• Short Story Contest, grades 9-12, first place, Andrew Janiszewski, Baldwin High; second, Caitlin Jackson, Lahainaluna High; third, Lisa Fujita, Baldwin High.

• Free Verse Poetry Contest, grades 1-3, first place, Lia Matsunaga, Wailuku Elementary; second, Ersa Millon, Ka'iulani Elementary; third, Stacia Kalanikau Ihu, Kahului Elementary School.

• Free Verse Poetry, grades 4-6, first place, Elaine Owen, 'Aikahi Elementary; second, Michael Alisa, La'ie Elementary; third, Chelsey Kaaihue, Kamaile Elementary.

• Free Verse Poetry Contest, grades 7-8, first place, Maris Van der Lee, '?ao School; second, Enli Li, Kawananakoa Middle School; third, Shane Kitahara, Moanalua Middle School.

• Free Verse Poetry Contest, grades 9-12, first place, Nadine Yamamura, Baldwin High; second, Julius Calasicas, Kalani High; third, Jacquelyn Casil, Waipahu High.

• Problem Solving Contest, grades 7-8, first place, Kelli Okamoto, Kapa'a Middle School; second, Mari Takemoto-Chock, Waiakea Intermediate; third, Fejale Agagas, Aliamanu Intermediate.

• Problem Solving Contest, grades 9-12, first place, Crystal Costa; second, Traci Gushiken; third, Derick Baranowski, all of Mililani High.


Ballet dancer in competition

Jennifer Rowe of Ho-nolulu was selected to compete in the recent 2002 USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Miss. Dancers competed for scholarships, cash awards and medals.

"Being among the dancers selected to compete in the USA IBC is a tremendous accomplishment," said Sue Lobrano, USA IBC executive director. "Dancers are selected that exemplify the highest caliber of artistic performance and skills."

The selection committee, composed of renowned dance professionals, considered applications from around the globe.
