U.S. will play Japan for Cup softball championship

Jennie Finch scattered seven hits and struck out eight as the United States advanced to the championship game of the U.S. Cup softball tournament with a 3-0 victory over China yesterday.

Nina Lindenberg hit a solo homer for the U.S. (3-1), which will play Japan (4-0) for the title today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. It will be played at 3 p.m.

Jessica Mendoza doubled in Team USA's first run in the third inning, Lindenberg homered to left to lead off the fourth, and Lisa Fernandez hit an RBI single in the fifth to complete the scoring.
In other games yesterday:
Japan 1, Canada 0: Masumi Mishima scored the lone run on a throwing error by shortstop Jackie Nichol in the eight inning.
Mishima reached base on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a throwing error by Nichol and took third on a wild pitch.
Japan pitcher Yukiko Ueno struck out 11 and yielded four hits. Former University of Hawai'i-Hilo star Kristy Odamura batted 2-for-4 for Canada.
China 5, Canada 2: Li Qi allowed six hits and struck out seven, and China scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Canada and advance to today's bronze medal game against Australia. It will be played at 1 p.m.
Wei Qiang batted 2-for-3, including a two-run single during the eighth-inning rally.
Sommer West batted 3-for-4 for Canada, which finished the tournament with a 1-4 record.
VOLLEYBALL
Outrigger girls second: The Outrigger Canoe Club placed second in the 18 Club Division at the USA Junior Olympic Girls Volleyball Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Outrigger lost to the Utah Players Volleyball Club, 25-22 and 26-24, in the championship game last week.
Alicia Arnott, La'akea Campbell and Kanoe Kamana'o were named to the all-tournament team.
Wong, Metzger 17th: Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong placed 17th at the third FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour stop in Stavanger, Norway. They split $2,520.
The 11th-seeded Metzger and Wong, who were eliminated from title contention Friday, defeated 27th-seeded Fabio Diez and John Garcia Thomson of Spain, 21-14 and 21-13, yesterday.
KAYAKING
Colin fourth: Kailua's Kathy Colin finished fourth with partner Ruth Nortje in the K-1 1,000-meter women's race at the 22nd International Regatta in Duisburg, Germany.
The top finishers are usually favored to place at the Senior World Championships, which will be in Seville, Spain, next month.
BASKETBALL
Kalakaua finishes 2-2: Shanna Dacanay scored 13 points as the Kalakaua Wahine beat the Bend, Ore. all-stars, 35-31, yesterday in the End of the Oregon Trail girls basketball tournament in Oregon City, Ore.
Kalakaua, which made 12 steals against Bend, finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
MEETING
QB Club: KCCN sportscaster Bobby Curran will speak at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club. Curran will focus on the new KCCN format and University of Hawai'i sports broadcasts.
Golfers Travis Toyama and Bobbi Kokx, the outstanding male and female sports persons for June, are also on the program.
Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant, followed by the program at noon.
