UH moves up in Sears Cup

Advertiser Staff

Buoyed by a national championship in men's volleyball, the University of Hawai'i has earned its highest Sears Cup finish in six years.

The Sears Cup goes to the school in each Division (NCAA I, II, III and NAIA) with the most overall points in a cross-section of sports. Schools are awarded points for finishes in 20 sports (10 men's and 10 women's).

Stanford won the Division I title for 2001-'02, followed by Texas, Florida, North Carolina and UCLA. UH was 83rd among 239 Division I point-getters, the school's best finish since 1995-'96 when it was 68th. In nine years, UH has yet to finish above 68th.

Brigham Young University-Hawai'i was the highest finisher among local Division II schools at 52nd place. Hawai'i Pacific was 105th and UH-Hilo 188th among 208 schools.

Of UH's 215 points, 100 came from the men's volleyball team. Others were contributed by women's volleyball (50), men's swimming (40) and men's basketball (25).

"It has been a banner year with what our men's and women's volleyball teams, basketball teams and football have done," said Hugh Yoshida, UH athletic director. "But (while) it is one of the best years we've had recently, I'm a little disappointed we didn't make the Top 50. Hopefully, we'll do that next year."
