Army asbestos case to benefit three schools

Advertiser Staff

The Army and subcontractor Precision Demolition and Construction will pay for asbestos removal projects at three Hawai'i schools and pay a $26,400 settlement for violations in the removal of asbestos at Fort Shafter in March 2000.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency yesterday announced that the agreement settles its case against Army Garrison Hawai'i at Fort Shafter and the construction firm.

The EPA identified several violations of the Clean Air Act during demolition of a building at Fort Shafter Flats.

Asbestos-containing material was not kept wet and may have been discharged into the air during the work, the EPA said.

Asbestos is a cancer-causing agent and the EPA considers it a hazardous substance in air emissions.

Precision will pay the fine, and the Army will pay for asbestos removal at three public schools. The schools were not identified.
