Former Big island detective to undergo mental exam

HILO A Big Island judge has ordered a mental examination for a former police detective charged with murdering his wife.

Defense attorney Stanton Oshiro asked for the exam for Albert Pacheco, 46, and Deputy County Prosecutor Darien Ching didn't object.

Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura yesterday ordered a panel of psychologists and psychiatrists to submit their reports to the court by Aug. 26.

Pacheco was suffering from "some form of mental disability" when Cathalene Pacheco, 42, was fatally shot Jan. 4, Oshiro said.

Pacheco resigned from the police force a month later. He was scheduled to stand trial November fourth.

Police said Pacheco rammed his wife's van with his car, then shot her numerous times in the head. He was charged with murder, criminal property damage, terroristic threatening and use of a firearm in a felony.

Pacheco served 10 years with the Honolulu Police Department and the past 11 with the Hawaii County police force.

Suspect arrested in university area burglary

Police arrested a man yesterday in connection with an overnight burglary in April.

The burglary occurred at a business at 1010 University Avenue sometime between midnight April 18 and 7:30 the next morning.

Officers found fingerprints on the cash register drawer, which had been pried open. They also found a screwdriver.

The fingerprints led to the arrest for investigation of second-degree burglary.

The suspect then was released pending further investigation.
