Business professor John Steelquist filed nomination papers yesterday to run for the City Council's District 6, which includes the downtown business district, Chinatown, Kaka'ako, Ala Moana, Makiki and Tantalus.

John Steelquist is chairman of the Makiki Neighborhood Board.
Steelquist, 62, is chairman of the Makiki Neighborhood Board and co-owner (with his wife, Laura) of a small business in Kaka'ako that provides mobility and home healthcare equipment.

He said his experience could help deal with the challenges facing the city.

"I am seeking election to provide service with integrity, experience and aloha to the people of Honolulu," he said. "Honolulu deserves qualified leaders committed to the principle of leadership as community service."

Steelquist is from a kama'aina family from Kaua'i. He grew up in Manoa and graduated from Punahou School.

He served in the Air Force for 20 years and his assignments included time in Texas and California, and a tour in Vietnam.

He has been a professor at Chaminade University since 1984 and has been extensively involved in the community.

He has led the Makiki Neighborhood Board for the past 16 years. He lives in Makiki, is involved in various projects with Central Union Church and active with the Rotary Club of East Honolulu.
