17 ceramics artists collaborating at UH

Seventeen professional ceramic artists from around the world will spend four weeks at the University of Hawai'iiManoa ceramics facility beginning Monday as part of the latest East-West Ceramics Workshop, an international artistic collaboration that brings together artists and UH students to create and discuss their work.

The artists specialize in different techniques and clays, from hand-built porcelain to wheel-thrown stoneware, and fire their work using techniques ranging from raku pit firing to high-fire kiln firing.

The program is organized by UH art professor Suzanne Wolfe, who organized similar programs in 1995 and 1998.

The participating artists this year come from New Zealand, Korea, Taiwan, Germany, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Latvia, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and the United States.

The public is invited to chat with the artists and watch them work from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 3.

Finished work will be on display in the UH Art Gallery from Sept. 1 to 27. An exhibition of student work produced in the cross-cultural exchange will be on display in the Commons Gallery.
