Cooper returning to Shipman helm

KEA'AU, Hawai'i — W.H. Shipman Ltd., Puna's largest landowner, yesterday announced Bobby Cooper will return as president of the family firm following the resignation of Robert Saunders.

Cooper, who was president of the Hawai'i Island Chamber of Commerce until July 1, will reclaim the position he left five years ago.

Shipman is in the process of developing a 32-acre regional shopping complex to be known as the Gateway Center. It recently won County Council zoning approval following a year's delay. The cost of project has been estimated at $30 million.

Company officials said Saunders left his post to become representative of CSV Hospitality LLC, a San Francisco-based investment firm that is planning a small hotel project in Kea'au. It is the first public notification of the plan for the Kea'au hotel.

Cooper has served on the Shipman board for about 10 years.

Kona ex-policeman to have mental test

HILO, Hawai'i — Former Kona policeman Albert Pacheco, who is accused of shooting his wife Jan. 4 after ramming her van twice with his police car, will undergo a mental examination.

Judge Greg Nakamura on Wednesday agreed with a defense request to have Pacheco tested.

Pacheco, 46, a detective who resigned in February, is "suffering from some sort of mental disability," said Stanton Oshiro, his court-appointed attorney.

An affidavit filed by Oshiro states Pacheco had sought professional help for a diagnosis of depression prior to the shooting death of his wife, Cathalene, 42, near their home in Waikoloa.

Prosecutors did not object to the possible delay of Pacheco's trial, which is scheduled to start Nov. 4.

Nakamura said the court proceedings will be suspended while the tests are conducted, and asked that reports on the examination be submitted to him by Aug. 26.
