Legislator files to run for City Council

State Rep. Nestor Garcia yesterday filed nomination papers to run for the City Council candidate in the newly created District 9, which includes Mililani Town, Waipahu, Waikele, Kunia and Makakilo.

Garcia, 45, is a former television reporter who served eight years in the state House. He said he is ready take on the challenges of issues close to home such as potholes, the budget and reliable emergency response service.

He said he brings a proven record and would work "to win back the public trust and confidence" for the council.

Former Honolulu Police Chief Michael Nakamura is also running for the council's District 9 seat. Nakamura is a member of the state Board of Education.
