New venues will be sites for state championships

Advertiser Staff

The two newest major sports venues on O'ahu are each scheduled to be the site of state high school championships in the next school year.

Track and field will be held at the Kamehameha Schools' $14 million stadium, and cross country and tennis will be held at Central O'ahu Regional Park in Mililani.

The Hawai'i High School Athletic Association's schedule of 32 championships in 17 sports will be held on four islands.

Although most events will be held on O'ahu, some high-profile championships are going to Neighbor Islands: Boys and girls volleyball to Hilo, girls soccer to Maui and baseball also to Maui.

The site for the newest championship sport, judo, has not been selected.

Seven sports have been added, and the number of state team championships has grown from 20 to 32 since Keith Amemiya became the HHSAA's executive director four years ago. Eight of the new championships are for girls or co-ed.
