Paradise Ride, covering four islands, scheduled for July 20-27

The 5th annual Paradise Ride cycling event over four islands will be held July 20-27.

The ride benefits HIV/AIDS education, treatment and support programs in Hawai'i.

Participants begin with a O'ahu ride starting in Waikiki and also do rides on Kaua'i, Maui and in Kona on the Big Island for a total of 360 miles.

There also will be single-day, 40-mile options July 21 on O'ahu and July 22 on Kaua'i.

The ride also is looking for volunteers on each island.

Organizations benefitting from the ride are The Life Foundation, Malama Pono Kaua'i AIDS Project, the Maui AIDS Foundation, Big Island AIDS Project in Hilo and West Hawai'i AIDS in Kona.


Pacific Cup of Freediving

Athletes from more than 40 countries are expected for the Pacific Cup of Freediving Oct. 28-Nov. 4 at Kona on the Big Island.

Freediving is an underwater competition in which participants try to dive as deep as possible and to stay underwater as long as possible using only the air in their lungs.

One of the top freedivers has gone to a depth of 505.3 feet, and another remained underwater for more than 8 minutes, according to the United States Freediving Team.

This will be the first world championship to be held in the United States.

The International Association for the Development of Apnea and Island of Hawai'i YMCA are co-hosts of the event.

Koko Marina fishing tourney set

The first Koko Marina Center Fishing Tournament will be held at in waters off Maunalua Bay in Hawai'i Kai on Oct. 12.

About 50 boats are expected to participate in the event from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Final weigh-in will is at 6:30 p.m. at the boat docks of Koko Marina Center. Cash prizes totaling $15,000 are being offered.
