Advertiser Staff

Keith Amemiya, executive director of the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association, last week was elected to the board of directors of the National Federation of State High School Associations for a four-year term.

Amemiya, 36, is the youngest member of the 12-member national board. He has been in charge of Hawai'i's state championship tournaments since 1998, and has overseen the addition of championships for football and five other sports.

He was instrumental in arranging a football doubleheader between the two best teams in Hawai'i last season — Kahuku and St. Louis — and the two top teams in California — De La Salle and Long Beach Poly — on Sept. 21 at Aloha Stadium.

Amemiya was elected at the national convention in Boston.

VOLLEYBALL

• Long Beach State to host men's championships: The city of Long Beach, Calif., and Long Beach State have been awarded the 2003 NCAA Division I men's volleyball national championship, school officials said.

The final four teams in the tournament will compete at The Pyramid on campus with semifinal matches scheduled for May 1, 2003, and the championship match scheduled for May 3, 2003.

ARENA FOOTBALL

• Islanders sign Branch: The Hawaiian Islanders, of Arena Football League2, signed former University of Hawai'i wide receiver/ kick returner Darrick Branch.

Branch lettered four years in football from 1989-92, where he ranked fourth in career all-purpose yards and kickoff returns.

The Dallas native graduated in 1993 and was drafted in the eighth round (220th overall) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since then, Branch has been playing professionally for the Canadian Football League, NFL Europe and the Arena Football League.
