Student film earns Japan trip

Four student filmmakers from Pearl Ridge Elementary School left yesterday on a one-week trip to Japan to meet and interview the subject of their award-winning documentary "Voices from the Past, Hope for the Future."

The students were so moved by the tragic events of Sept. 11 and the history of Pearl Harbor that they made a film based on the lives of Marine bugler Richard Fiske and Zenji Abe, a former Japanese pilot who took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Fiske and Abe became friends after World War II.

The film recently won the top award at the New York Museum of Television & Radio. Panasonic decided to sponsor the students' trip to Japan.

The fourth- and fifth-grade students are Jordie Oceanar, Adrianna De Mello, Lauren Ige and Kelli Miyahira. They will be accompanied by teacher Kathy Nagaji as they visit Abe at his Tokyo home.
